What Does the Bible Say About Forgiveness?

Forgiveness is not excusing harm. It’s choosing not to be chained to it. God invites us to forgive because He loves us—and because He wants us whole.

Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.

Luke 23:34

Be kind… forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

Ephesians 4:32

Forgive each other… even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

Colossians 3:13

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive…

1 John 1:9

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

Psalm 103:12

For if you forgive others… your heavenly Father will also forgive you…

Matthew 6:14–15

I don’t tell you until seven times, but until seventy times seven.

Matthew 18:21–22

He delights in loving kindness… You will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.

Micah 7:18–19

Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone…

Mark 11:25

If it is possible… live peaceably with all men.

Romans 12:18

Steps toward forgiveness

  1. 1Tell the truth. Name what happened without minimizing it.
  2. 2Release repayment. Forgiveness is “I won’t seek revenge. I place this in God’s hands.”
  3. 3Set boundaries. Forgiveness does not require staying unsafe.
  4. 4Pray blessing. Not because they deserve it—because you deserve freedom.
  5. 5Connect. Share your prayer request. Healing grows in community.

Father, You know the hurt I carry. I choose to bring it to You. Please heal my heart and give me wisdom. Help me forgive as You have forgiven me—without fear, without pretending, and with Your peace. In Jesus’ name, amen.
